EXTRACELLULAR SIGNAL-REGULATED KINASE AS BIOMARKER IN THE MOLECULAR EPIDEMIOLOGY OF HUMAN CARCINOGENESIS II., CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS
The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade is a major signaling system by which cells transduce extracellular signals into intracellular responses. A member of this family, extracellular signal-activated kinase (ERK), was shown to play a crucial role in proliferation and apoptosis. Since development of tumors often result from the alteration of different signal transduction pathways, ERK may play an important as a biomarker in tumor diagnosis and prognosis. The present review summarizes the findings regarding the clinical value of investigating ERK activation in human malignant diseases and the potential of ERK as an early molecular epidemiologic biomarker in human carcinogenesis.
