IMPACT OF THE MEDITERRANEAN LIFESTYLE ON THE HEALTH STATUS OF FOREIGN MEDICAL STUDENTS IN HUNGARY |
Objective: To evaluate the possible impact of the so-called Mediterranean lifestyle on the medical students’ health status. Design: cross-sectional survey to determine the prevalence of tobacco smoking (Fagerström test), alcohol consumption, significant dietary habits, physical exercise (modified Simple Lifestyle Indicator Questionnaire) in order to define the self assessed health status (according to the 36-item Short Form Health Survey; SF-36). Subjects: sample size N=276 English course medical students from abroad at Semmelweis University (mean age: 25.67, SD: 6.82 years). Results: Mediterranean heritage itself does not improve the self-assessed health status, however keeping Mediterranean diet generates positive health attitudes. Conclusion: medical students with inherited Mediterranean lifestyle and diet seem to give up these habits when living abroad for a longer time and are adopting globalized dietary and lifestyle patterns. |
